Free Things to Do: Making Friends with Seniors and Boomers

If it’s free, what have you got to lose? Every place on this list draws quality people (and a few quirky types). A guy or gal who wants to make friends, either platonic or romantic, should make time for these best places to meet people over 40.

Seattle Art Walk – First Thursday of Every Month:

  • Pioneer Square Art Galleries
  • 6pm - 9pm (approximately)
  • firstThursdaySeattle.com (or just follow the crowds)

The Seattle Art Walk is definitely one of the coolest, hippest, and best places in Seattle to meet people. Very Fun. Tres Chic. Pioneer Square is great fun, however people over 40 might want to bring pals for after dark festivities. (It's light all summer.) Art gives everyone something to talk about.

Travel Lectures and Language Classes:

  • Rick Steves Travel Center
  • 130 – 4th Avenue North
  • Edmonds, WA 98020

This venue draws couples and singles of every age. There are lectures and movies about beautiful regions throughout Europe. And, who can resist learning a bit more about romantic Italy? Or, make friends with seniors and boomers at a beginning Spanish class. Sign up for free Rick Steves' Travel Classes.

Molbaks Nursery:

  • 13625 NE 175th St
  • Woodinville, WA 98072

It’s a very green thing to do. “Boomers find gardening soothing. There’s a "60s" ideology that is still a part of the psychic makeup of the Baby Boomers,” says Charlyne Varkonyi of the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. Molbaks Nursery is free fun as long as visitors keep their green in their pockets. This garden center also has great classes where it’s easy to make friends.

Seattle Farmers Markets:

Everyone needs to eat, so why not go to a market where the food is organic and the people are fun. These markets are some of the greatest places to meet people in Seattle, and a few of the most popular ones are:

  • Ballard Market (great fruits and veggies and one of the best places to meet people): Sunday 11am–3pm.
  • University District Farmers Market (tasty cheese, French bread, Jams): Saturday 9am–2pm.
  • Fremont Market (actually more like a flea market, so go the Fremont PCC for organic food): Sundays 10am–4pm.

Farmers markets are a great place to find healthy people over 50 who are great cooks. PCC markets have free cooking classes. There are several other markets listed at seattlefarmersmarkets.org

Cheap Fun: Best Places in Seattle (and Surrounding Areas) to Meet People Over 40 or 50

Contra Dancing Lessons:

  • ($5-$8)
  • Phinney Neighborhood Center - 6532 Phinney N, Seattle
  • Fridays 7pm–10pm
  • SeattleDance.org

Contra Dancing is a high-energy blast and it’s not for sissies. It’s a bit like French Court Dance, but it is neither stately nor serene. The music is lively and dancers can come alone and partner up there. The coolest part is that everyone switches partners continuously, so men dance with every gal in the line and vice versa. This is what makes it a great place to make friends over 40.

Volksmarching - Peoples’ March:

  • ($25.00 year)
  • Emerald City Wanderers
  • WalkingWithECW.org

“Meet friends and walk scenic trails at your own pace for fun, fitness, and friendship,” says the American Volkssport Association. Volksmarching is non-competitive fitness walking that began in Europe. Participants typically walk 6 miles on an outdoor path. The walkers are usually over 50, but often there are younger people and kids.

Some of the best places in Seattle (and surrounding areas) are cheap or free. There are lots of fun things to do in Seattle to meet people of every age, but especially those who are over 40. Get out there and walk, dance, learn about Europe, meet artists, and get fresh food. Making friends is fun.
